One of the fastest growing markets in EU

Romania is one of the biggest markets in Central and Eastern Europe with around 20 million citizens and a strong community living abroad. The sector is flourishing and expanding quickly from year to year.

Romanian economy performed very well in the last years, showing in 2016 among the highest growth in Europe.

Due to the economic growth more and more Romanians travel by plane. The distances in Romania are quite long and therefore the internal flights have lately increase significantly. Few years ago there were only flight between Bucharest and major local cities. Now there are several flights between major cities in Romania. It is now more efficient to fly then to use car or train. The economic growth is also visible in connection with major business partners within EU, where there are several connections every day with Germany, Italy, France, Spain, UK, Austria from several airports all over the country.

In the same time, there are a large communities of Romanians living and working abroad. There are estimates that more than 3 million Romanians are living and working abroad, mainly in Italy, Spain, UK. For the summer periods, Romanian prefers to spend their holiday in the Mediterranean area, Greece being by far the most popular destination, followed by Turkey, Italy and Spain.

Number of passengers in Romania

Romania has a number of 17 airports which generated a traffic of 23 million panssengers in 2016, which means an increase of 23% compared to last year. Of this total, 11 millions pasengers passed through Henri Coanda Aiport in Bucharest.

The number of passengers who transited Romania increased last year with 23%, reaching around 16 million passengers. 67% of the passengers transit Henri Coanda - Bucharest airport, 11.5% Avram Iancu - Cluj airport and 7.1% Traian Vuia - Timisoara airport.

Additionally, the airport from Iasi had one of the biggest increase in terms of passengers: 131.2%.

Of the total number of passengers, 89.1% are passengers using the international transport and the rest of passengers are using the intern one.

Low – cost companies announced huge increases of their transport capacity. The first three low costs operators from Romanian market reach a market share of more than 60%.

Blue Air, Wizzair and Ryanair, three of the low cost operators announced recently massive increases of the transport capacity, contributing to a significant passenger’s growth.

Ryanair will operate 26 rutes in 2017, estimating a number of transported passengers of 2.9 million. Wizzair, with a current number of pasengers of 5.5 million foresees an increase of 33% of the traffic. Blue air announced 24 new rutes, additional to the 30 existing ones.

New investments in the airports development needed

The strategic development plan is included in the transport master plan of Romania that is divided in multiple phases, each of the phase foreseeing big investments, which will significantly increase the number of passengers. The first phase will involve 450 million euro and is expected to increase the number of passengers with 50% and during the last phase, the investment will reach the amount of 900 million euro and will facilitate the construction of commercial areas, cargo locations and other additional services. Several airports are now in planning phase of investments in upgrades and new terminals.

Landbrug. Fødevarer og Agroindustri
Rumænien er et af EU's største landbrugslande - ca. fem gange Danmark - og med et landbrugsareal på omkring 9,5 mill. ha. Landbruget er præget af mange små brug både i den animalske og vegetabilske produktion med i alt omkring 4,5 mill. bønder og den kommercielle landbrugsproduktion er derfor domineret af få men store produktionsenheder. Fødevareselvforsyningsgraden er derfor ekstrem lav og der må importeres ca. 70 % af det samlede forbrug af fødevarer og hjælpemidler til fødevare- og agroindustrien, der gør Rumænien til et potentielt mål for bl.a. dansk eksport.


Retail
Rumænien er det syvende største nation blandt de 27 EU-nationer, med 21.500.000 indbyggere. Den rumænske Retail markedet har oplevet en enorm vækst i de seneste år og rangerer i top tre lande over hele verden med de fleste forretninger mærker af nytilkomne i 2010, ifølge en undersøgelse fra CB Richard Ellis.
Den rumænske Retail marked anslås til en værdi af 31 milliarder dollars (90.150 millioner RON), tendens vedligeholdes af fødevarer salg. Den Euromonitor International undersøgelse viser en stigning på 13 procent på salget af fødevarer, drikkevarer og tobak og et fald på 3,6 procent for non-food produktsalg. Ifølge den samme undersøgelse, markedet i 2011 forventes at nå 36 milliarder dollars (105 milliarder RON), en vækst på 8,9 procent i forhold til 2010.


Møbler
Rumænien leverer på de udenlandske markeder omkring 60% af de møbler produktionsmængde og den vigtigste destination markeder er UE markeder.
